Abstract

Reading habits play a crucial role in shaping students' academic performance, particularly in secondary schools. This study investigates the influence of reading habits on academic performance among secondary school students in Hargeisa, Somaliland. A descriptive survey research design was employed, involving 200 students from five secondary schools selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, covering reading frequency, materials read, and perceived impact on academic performance. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation, were used to assess relationships between reading habits and academic achievement. The findings indicate a significant positive correlation between reading habits and students’ academic performance, with frequent and diverse reading contributing to better grades. However, challenges such as limited access to reading materials, distractions from digital entertainment, and inadequate reading culture hinder students' reading engagement. The study recommends policy interventions, including improved library facilities, structured reading programs, and awareness campaigns to promote a strong reading culture. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on literacy development and academic success in secondary education.
